Barnes Will Let Loss Heal Before Making NBA Decision

Mar 31, 2011 10:36 AM

Shirley Barnes told The Daily Tar Heel that her son has goals that he wants to fulfill.

The North Carolina freshman forward said after losing 76-69 to Kentucky on Sunday in the Elite Eight that he felt just like he did three years ago, when a last-second shot gave Iowa’s Marshalltown the 51-50 win against Barnes-led Ames in the state playoffs when he was a sophomore.

“That hurt for three months,” his mom, Shirley Barnes, said on Tuesday. “And that was the last time he lost. He has goals and I think he wants to fulfill those goals.”

When asked if he had played his final game in a North Carolina uniform, Barnes gave no indication which way he was leaning, only that he was living in the moment that visibly consumed him.

“I’m not thinking about the NBA,” he said.

Shirley Barnes said when the time is right, her son will make his decision.

“Harrison needs to heal from this loss,” she said. “We haven’t really talked about it, honestly. It’s not pressing to us. It’s what it is.”

Former Carolina PG Larry Drew II Enrolls At UCLA

Mar 29, 2011 10:26 AM

Point guard Larry Drew II has enrolled at UCLA after abruptly leaving North Carolina last month.

Drew left the Tar Heels abruptly in February amid frustrations with playing time, after his numbers dropped drastically from his sophomore season.

Drew averaged 4.4 points and 3.9 assists in 22.8 minutes per game as a junior, down from 8.5 points, 5.9 assists and 28.8 minutes per game in 2009-10.

Due to transfer rules, Drew will not be eligible to take the court for UCLA until the 2012-13 season, though he will be on scholarship next season.

Kentucky's Terrence Jones Hopes To Apply Lessons Learned Against Henson

Mar 27, 2011 3:45 PM

John Henson is three blocks shy of setting a new North Carolina single-season record with 121 swats.

He averages 3.2 a game, and so win or lose against Kentucky on Sunday, the sophomore should get the record.
Well, maybe not if Terrence Jones has learned anything.

In the last UNC-UK meeting on Dec. 4, Henson rejected three shots and Jones went 3-for-17 from the field with only nine points.

“When a player has length, you usually have to go right into their chest and shorten their length and make them back up a little bit and I just settled for jump shots,” Jones said after the Wildcats’ 62-60 win against Ohio State in the Sweet 16 on Friday.

Henson’s length disturbed Jones, who was playing in just the seventh collegiate game of his career. The 6-foot-10 Henson surprised the bulkier, 6-foot-8 Jones and altered many of his shots, including his first two 3-point attempts.

Also against the Wildcats, Henson grabbed 12 rebounds to Jones’ six. Not to mention Jones was one of four Wildcats who fouled out in that game.

“Hopefully I’ll have a better night than what I had there,” Jones said. “I’m not going to sleep. Just play my best rebounding and scoring.”

UNC's Zeller, Henson Confident They Can Cause Problems Inside Against Kentucky

Mar 27, 2011 3:41 PM

Three games into the NCAA Tournament, and it's not too difficult to figure out North Carolina's game plan -- get the ball to Tyler Zeller or John Henson.

Seven-foot Zeller enters today's Elite Eight matchup with Kentucky at the Prudential Center averaging 27.3 points and 8.7 rebounds in three tournament games. Henson, who stands at 6-10 with a 7-4 wingspan, is averaging 17.3 points, 11.0 rebounds.

But it's not just on offense that the pair are making an impact. Henson has blocked 52 shots in the past 11 games, and Zeller's length also helps to alter shots.

"John and I think we can cause a lot of problems for them," Zeller said. "I know in the first game, we challenged a lot at the rim and they were struggling to finish at the rim a little bit. But like I said, they've improved a lot so it'll be interesting to see if we can do it again."

UNC Shooting Guard Dexter Strickland Playing With Torn Meniscus

Mar 24, 2011 10:43 AM

Dexter Strickland has been playing with a slightly torn meniscus in his right knee. He could have had surgery in February, when the injury occurred, but instead chose to keep playing – not uttering a peep to fans or media about swelling or off-and-on soreness.

“I don’t use it as an excuse for my play,” Strickland said after Williams revealed the injury following the ACC tournament, when the sophomore shot 0-for-4 over three games.

Strickland has said his knee has felt better since then, and not surprisingly that’s correlated on the stat sheet. He went 8-for-14 from the floor during his first two NCAA tournament games, and his two free throws Sunday with five seconds left sealed UNC’s victory over the Huskies – and his first trip to the round of 16. Considering what Strickland has quietly meant to the team, Williams said that it was fitting that it was he at the line in that situation.

“The kids love him, they gravitate to him,” Williams said. “They understand that he hasn’t gotten the accolades, the honors that everyone else has had, but yet they understand how important he is to our team. Nobody thinks they can chase him down from behind. Nobody enjoys him guarding them. Nobody enjoys trying to stop him when he tries to take it to the basket.”

MJ Chides UNC's Harrison Barnes For Wearing Kobe’s Shoes

Mar 23, 2011 6:13 PM

Michael Jordan held court with several North Carolina players during the opening weekend of the NCAA tournament.

Jordan took exception to Harrison Barnes wearing Kobe Bryant’s Nike shoes as the freshman exited Charlotte’s Time Warner Cable Arena.

"If I see you in them Kobe Bryants, man, I'm gonna cut you right off," Jordan told Barnes. "I don't care if your feet kill you, you're gonna wear them Jordans.

"Wait 'til I tell your momma, man. I'm gonna tell her. But if you're gonna keep winning, you can wear them. But that Duke game, you got killed."

The Tar Heels are one of several programs that wear Jordan Brand shoes and uniforms.

Tar Heels Well Versed In Clutch Situations

Mar 23, 2011 10:26 AM

The Tar Heels, who are coming off Sunday’s 86-83 victory against Washington, have played four games decided by three points or less or in overtime in seven outings this month.

“We feel like it’s just another close game, with the amount we’ve been in,” freshman point guard Kendall Marshall said. “We’re confident when we’re going down the stretch that those guys in the Carolina jerseys are going to make the right decisions.”

North Carolina’s relative inexperience on the roster might figure to be a detriment in such tension-filled closing minutes. But because the Tar Heels have been immersed in these for months, they’ve become comfortable in a variety of scenarios.

“We talk all the time about playing with poise,” Williams said. “They’ve got this whatever ‘it’ is, they’ve got it.”

Source: Barnes Leaning Toward Staying At North Carolina

Mar 21, 2011 10:45 AM

Harrison Barnes is a top NBA prospect. Most NBA draft outlets have him pegged as a top five pick.

With those kind of projections, you'd think the 6-foot-8 small forward would be a lock to come out. Not so, according to ESPN.com’s Chad Ford.

Barnes would like to win an NCAA championship for the Tar Heels before declaring for the draft, a source told Ford.

"He's the sort of guy who cares about more than just going to the NBA," the source said. "He wants to leave his mark."

Rick Barnes, Jamie Dixon Among Most Underperforming Coaches In Tournament Play

Mar 21, 2011 10:29 AM

Basketball-Reference.com’s Neil Paine ran the numbers and found that Texas’ Rick Barnes and Pittsburgh’s Jamie Dixon are among the worst offenders when it comes to underperforming their seeds in the NCAA Tournament.

Barnes posts a career mark 4.31 wins worse than you would expect from a team with its seeding.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina coach Roy Williams top the list of coaches who overperformed their teams’ seeds by the greatest number of wins.
